A Poem on Single Dad

A Poem on Single Dad

Being a single dad is not an easy task, neither does one prepare for it,

One needs strength and discipline to keep focused on what is right,

For the child depends on their love and might to guide them into the future,

One is not allowed to falter but get up every time they fall for it is a race against time,

As a single dad, I have to stand tall and strong to build a wall of protection around my child,

My heart should be filled with love and responsibility for my child needs to feel cared for,

And always should my mind keep dreaming for a better future both for me and my child,

For neither of us can be lonely in the world where we are alone for we stick together,

Every morning I should rise even before the dews dry up or the sun shine its light,

For duty calls and I have to prepare myself and my child for the day,

Our day beginning with meditation for we know it is God who keeps us going all the time,

Breakfast served we get time to catch up with the news of the day from the radio and newspaper,

As a mentor and guided by my responsibility as a parent I have to tell my child the reality of the world,

That it is good to be wary of the friends one has to keep for they determine their success or failure,

Also to respect the elders for this will earn them peace, unending grace and blessings in their life,

And run away from any group that wants to break the rule of law for the safety of their life,

I pack the lunches for my child and me as we head for our destinations, school and me off to work,

Bidding each other goodbye we know that we will meet again in the evening to warmest greetings,

For we know that we are there for each other and we will face the world together as one team,

We both cherish each moment we have with each other for we are in this world only for a season,

The eyes of my child sparkle brightly with love at the entrance to the school,

Seemingly lost in thought I stand there watching my child run innocently to class,

Startled by the greetings of the gateman I wake up from my reverie to find myself smiling sheepishly,

The gateman understands my situation, he smiles back beckoning me to go my way everything is fine,

When I reach my workplace I greet my workmates as we all begin our daily duties, everyone is happy,

Nearly all men there are single dads and we all understand the challenge of raising a child alone,

But each one of us has got their workmates back and we always find words of inspiration to calm us,

Believing that no one can do it alone we hold ourselves together for our strength lies in our numbers,

The trials and strife I face as a single dad are not only confined to me that much I understand,

But when I look at my child I find the joy and strength that I need to carry on and plan a better future,

For through tears we have lived, laughter and pain we have shared and no single moment did we waver,

The dinners and breakfasts we have shared together have been a source of bonding together,

A father’s love is unique and strong it can calm the storms and provide protection to the child,

For when the day is over the sun sets and the world become still darkness reigning the universe,

The father stands alone with his unbreakable will and double love that can never be masked,

His heartbeats soothes the abode of his child and there is never sadness in his presence,

As I keep on with my daily work, I visualize a better future for my lovely child,

Even with my waning strength I will still be there for my child even to the end of my pilgrimage,

I will always be there to catch my child in case of a fall and provide protection with brevity and pride,

Being a single father has made me look at life in a different perspective, and the world has space for all,

When the time comes for the afternoon meal we all sit around as friends to share a meal,

Amidst that circle of friendship stories of sorrows and pain are shared hope strengthened,

Thoughts flood my mind as I listen to men narrating their experiences which are crazy and intriguing,

These are the moments we cherish for we know we are not alone in the crowd but we are loved,

As evening approaches we call it a day and see each other off with promise to meet again tomorrow,

It is sad to say goodbye to my friends but I know that my child is waiting for me at the school gate,

My heart if full of real love for my child and I always give my all even when things are bad,

Because my child is a light that brings happiness to my life and my reason to wake up and try again,

When we meet with my child we both exchange our pleasantries with grace and happiness,

Walking home we immerse ourselves in songs and tell each other about occurrences of the day,

These are moments we both look forward to for these moments make our hearts glad and contented,

Passing through the market we pick up groceries and everything we would need to make our meals,

As a single dad I may not have riches to shower my child with or money to finance a lavish lifestyle,

We may not have much but we always get by even when some days proof challenging to us,

I am no superhero but my love which never goes astray is a light that guides my child through the dark,

And my heart is always the home where my child will find the spark,

As I fix the evening meal I know that what I am doing is brave and true and will shine through,

Raising my child without giving up and never complaining fulfils the dreams I have always had,

To see joy in the eyes of my child and through innocent smiles that tells me all will be well,

So as a single dad I will always stand tall and be proud of my achievements hoping for a better future.
