Nandi

Nandi had settled in Aldai once they arrived from Mt Elgon(Tulwop kony,Kapkugo) and having separated from Kipsigis who went to Kericho. Nandi were known as farmers. They had a well structured social system where everyone belonged to a clan(oreet).The family was the smallest social unit in the Nandi community. Nandi community had 17 clans and each clan had a totem(Emblem) to be identified with. People from the same clan and same totem could not intermarry.

History has it that Kong’ony (crested crane) was the first animal to be allocated a family. Hence Mooi (Kong’ony) is regarded as the ‘leader’ while Kimageet (hyena) is claimed to have been the last tiondo to be allocated a family. However,it comes along with several rules of favor (ostensibly to hide the fact that it was the last). Hence, even though the Nandi claim ‘Cheptaab oreet age ne wendi oreet age’ literally ‘a daughter from one clan goes to another clan and belongs in the new clan’, to mean a woman has no clan, the Tungo(korap oor) girls are permitted to retain their clan identity.The animals in question are meant to be respected by respective clans. It won’t be hurt as that is considered as a taboo.
