The Nature of Cousins

The Nature of Cousins

When the world betrays us, when the foundation gives in and the walls crumble down, are cousins our best protection?

Are they a strong fabric that can offer solace and keep the bond  of the bloodline strong when life plays its game on us?

When our souls are in the gutter, during those moments when we find ourselves in the murkier territories will they be our saviours?

These questions one ponders, when times change and cousins find themselves estranged and far from each other.

The Nature of Cousins

Growing up happiness filled the air, it was joyful when they played together within the walls of their grandparent’s home,

Being closer to each other , sharing their adventures, joys and sorrows they dreamt of this unity to last forever,

Their parents busy with working hard to provide for them left them on their own, they would have to be taught by the world,

Now grown up and having charted their own paths, they become busy for each other only to meet when time for feast or sadness arrives,

In times gone cousins offered strong connections, they gave one a sense of belonging, their affection meant the world,

They would keep the secrets of their adventures, would stand in for each other and protect each other’s interests,

They would fight their fears in unison, being empathic towards each other and offering each other a shoulder to lean on,

Their role was unmatched, like a moonlight they lit the steps for each other, like sunshine they warmed each other’s hearts,

Those times memories were cherished as the cousins stood tall to guard each other, their bond strong as a tiger,

Their loyalty unquestioned, they were true to their calling of offering solace, protection   and comfort to each other,

Their presence made living the days in the chaotic world easy, the storms of life would be dispersed and fears would shy away,

Embracing their affection the world became peaceful for even when hearts were broken, forgiveness would prevail,

But days have gone by, moments have turned to days, days to weeks, weeks to months and months into years,

The cousins have grown apart with each one charting their own path, visualizing their own dreams, and building their own lives,

Once full of warmth the abode is now empty and cold, where it once burst with voices of joy is now filled with scary silence,

Where there were endless stories and playful nights is now an empty shell, once a sanctuary of dreams the grandparent’s home is now a lonely place,

The realm where the cousins witnessed their growth and learned the ropes of life is a deserted place, full of untold secrets,

The winds now carry the message of deceit, pain and fears, being jealous of each other is now a norm and small fights have become a routine,

Where there was forgiveness is  ow filled with revenge, where they protected each other they now betray each other, love is gone and hatred reigns,

Their spirits are now full of injuries, aspirations have been cast aside and laughter is now scarce, each works hard to put the other down,

The secrets have been revealed and daggers have been drawn, the world is now a battle field and the fights are intense and  injurious,

With no one to mediate there is no compromise, the cousins are determined to finish each other, everyone is fighting to outshine the other,

In family meetings each one wants to be the star where the aged will consult them before making important and crucial family decisions,

The others too don’t want to take it lying down, they too want their stars to shine and have a say in everything happening in the family,

In the times gone ideas were noble, the vision was communal and prosperity was paramount to everyone, but seasons have changed,

Hidden resentments have now flared up, the smiles have turned to sadness and where harmony ruled is now a centre of chaos and confusion,

The bond has been broken, the fabrics no longer hold, a reminder that dangers lurked underneath but no one was keen to notice them,

The cousins are no longer the best protection, for behind the smiles the hearts were dark, even when they showed care they were waiting to strike,

Their nature is no longer predictable, the sorrows and joys once shared have been lost into oblivion and so do the dreams,

The fears are real, the world is a big playing field and most are lost with no defence or a place to find comfort,

Moments have become unpredictable, there is no longer an empathic soul and the cousins can no longer stand tall during turbulent times,

Once a beacon of light it now begs the question if the cousins are true to their calling, can they really protect, can they really guide?

Even in all these moments of momentary pain the heart still yearns to reach out and bring everyone into the fold, to be with each other again,

The fights are not forever for they offer no solace, but forgiveness will always calm down the hearts and give peace to the souls,

Being from the same roots cousins have the same way of live and generational dreams to fulfil,  fighting each other would upset their forefathers,

They have to come together and build a strong wall to keep at bay the spears of downfall thrown by other people for individually they are weak but together they become strong,

But even when the pain becomes the yardstick the bloodline stills holds strong and forgiveness makes life easier for grudges bring more pain,

For even when the trust had been lost and smiles turned into tears, the bond still holds strong and true, healing the wounds inflicted on the heart,

Once injured the souls can now forgive, dreams can be shared again for treachery is short-lived and the lineage must remain intact,

Once forgiveness wins, broken hearts are mended and family ties strengthened,  the past is forgotten and souls walk the same track into a common future.
