What Causes My Unhappiness?
1)Wanting to live the life of other people
By comparing myself with others, I want to live their lives and walk their journey. I tend to look down on myself because I believe I am living a miserable life therefore hating myself. But I have no knowledge of the sacrifices they have made or where they draw their strength from yet I want to be like them. Wanting to live like others and not meeting those expectations makes me unhappy and my soul full of darkness.
How to overcome
Everyone has their own life to live and their journey to walk. I must be grateful for the blessings I have got because even those I see having better lives than me have their own shortcomings and also wish to live like someone else.
2)Lacking confidence
This world needs confidence for only the brave will eat of the spoils. When I lack confidence then I will bow down to every command coming my way even when it will be detrimental to me or my loved ones.
How to overcome
I must make a stand for what I believe in and be confident enough to defend my decisions in front of anyone who wants to undermine me.
3)Hatred
When there is anger in my heart there will be hatred. Where there is hatred no love will reside and I will hate everyone around me. Without love everyone will desert me and leave me lonely and sad.
How to overcome
Let go of anger and accept when someone apologizes for wronging me. Also taking steps to correct my mistakes and amends with those I wrong.
4)Having no vision
With no vision there is no goal to work on. When I lack goals in life then I will be planning for failure for I know not how to confront challenges in life. People with vision always succeed and change the world for the better. Lacking vision means I will be driven by decisions made by others and I will always try to proof myself to others.
How to overcome
Taking stock of my life and looking at the mistakes I have made and owning them. Then I should make a decision to have a goal and a timeline and stick to it. There is no harm in starting late; the problem is in not starting at all.
5)Lacking friends
Friends are the support one needs in life and any man without friends is vulnerable. When I have no friends, there is no one to turn to if a problem arises. No man is an island and everyone needs somebody in their life. Without friends my life is lonely and lacks joy and happiness.
How to overcome
Find friends who are genuine and happy to support each other succeed in life. Also I let go of friends with bad influence, who have no dreams and goals in life. Creating genuine networks will help me overcome unhappiness
6)Living in the past
The past is gone and trying to re-live it adds more pain to my present life. Thinking of past sorrows and pain reminds me of harrowing experiences I am trying forget. Living in the past means I will miss opportunities of the present and deprive myself the chance to plan for the future.
How to overcome
Let go of the pain and sorrows and face the world with a smile. My scars should remind me of how strong I am for surviving the past sorrows and be a stepping stone to build a better future.
7)Looking down on others
Everyone is important in this world no matter how insignificant they may seem. When I think of others as inferior I become emotionally unstable and any progress they make breeds jealousy. This in turn makes me sad because of their progress despite me taking them for granted. Jealousy brings about unhappiness and living in self denial.
How to overcome
Understand that this there is enough for everyone in this world and everyone has a role to play in the society. I cannot outshine everybody but must live in harmony with everyone. This will give me peace and happiness.
8)Not knowing my purpose
Everyone has a reason why they come to this world. Many who don’t find their purpose take their unfulfilled dreams into the grave. As I struggle to find my reason of existence I am confronted with unhappiness. The anxiety of wanting to make an impact to the world quickly eats me up and gives me negative feelings.
How to overcome
Look out for what I care about most and find myself doing passionately and with ease. Then I will know that is my purpose and I pursue it with determination. There is no overnight success but I must work out everything with patience.
9)Living in isolation
Everyone needs someone that is the cardinal rule of humanity. By isolating myself I will be missing the joy and happiness that comes with being with others and doing activities together. I am not able to learn new things because I am alone as the world acquires new technology. While the world moves on, I am left behind. Being alone breeds loneliness and unhappiness.
How to overcome
Move with people by joining social groups and networks of self empowerment. I must change my lifestyle and let people into my life and I will get to learn from them as they will from me. The result of sharing advices and knowledge will be sheer joy.
10)Setting the standards too high
In life it is good to have goals. But you must set goals which are high enough to make you work hard and low enough to enable you reach them. By setting high standards I find myself as a lone ranger with no one to push me to success.
How to overcome
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and if I rush I miss important signs during the journey and find myself lost. I have to understand that I should have standards but they should be realistic and attainable. Setting unrealistic standards is tantamount to setting up for failure.
11)Lack of enough rest and sleep
The body needs to relax same way the mind should have a rest. Getting enough rest and sleep means I can get up every morning fresh and rejuvenated to face the day. When I don’t get enough sleep the mind will not stand the activities of the day as I will be mostly distracted.
How to overcome
Engaging in activities that rids my body of tension like reading a good book, listening to music and sleeping well. Doing exercises that will keep me fit. And having enough sleep.
12)Alcoholism
Many people try to get through sorrows and pains of life using every means possible. Mine is taking alcohol because I believe that when I am drunk I forget my miserable life. Alcohol will hide my pain and make me smile at the world albeit for a short time. But this doesn’t resolve anything but bring more pain and unhappiness.
How to Overcome?
The truth however is that I cannot drink away my sorrows but taking alcohol means I only postpone my problems. Once I am sober I find myself confronting them again. So to make myself happy I should confront my problems when sober and find lasting solutions.
13)Lack of affection
Having my loved ones not giving me affection makes me sad. I understand that I am in this world for a season but I also deserve to be happy the way I make them happy. When I try to get close to them, they push me away and this makes me feel bad.
How to overcome
Understand why my loved ones are pushing me away. If there are issues then it is good to resolve them and work towards a common goal.
14)Debt
Owing people makes me worry. My creditors always calling on my door makes me tensed and anxious. I live my life not knowing what they plan against me and these worries eat up my peace. I remain unhappy when I know someone helped me when I was in need yet I am not able to pay back the debt.
How to overcome
Debt must be paid. I face my fears and tell those I owe the truth why I am unable to pay now. Nevertheless I should negotiate for an extension and we agree on new terms of repayment. Owing someone is not a death sentence and I should shake off my worries.
15)Living amidst toxic people
The environment I am in is full of negative people and they always talk me down when I try to rise. No one is there to give me hope or support my dreams come through. All the stories I hear are discouraging and cannot build me.
How to overcome
I move out from amongst negative people and build new alliances with those who ooze wisdom and positivity. It is better to lose friends and find better ones who m=want me to succeed.
16)Trying to please everyone
Not everybody will cry with you when the going gets tough, many will in fact walk away from your life as fast as possible. Those you think are your friends will cut you off once you find yourself in a fix. I try to make everyone happy and thus make it my priority to meet their expectations. When they disapprove of my actions I become unhappy.
How to overcome
I should understand that I cannot please everyone no matter how hard I try. Therefore I should prioritize my happiness in everything that I do. Making myself happy does not mean that I want others to be sad, it only means that all of us should pursue self satisfaction before making others happy.
Final Thoughts
Emotions change with time but being strong is about being able to control them. As I learn to control my emotions, then I will be able to create my own happiness. Also by cutting off toxic friends and relationships will I be able to infuse a fresh start of liveliness into my life.
Unhappiness is brought by my own doing and I can decide to prevent it. By being kind to others and not worrying about things I have no control over will give joy and happiness. I avoid walking with negative people and instead strike relations with those who are optimistic and positive about life. Only then will I experience true happiness.
