Why So Many Young People Are Struggling With Stress These Days?

Stress is not something one wants to experience in their lifetime. Many people undergo stress daily and probably few realize it. More so the youth, who are not aware how to realize and manage it.

If you are a youth today, there is a high chance you are going through stress right now. The first thing to know about stress is that it’s not just something that happens “out there” in the world. Rather, it’s a reaction to the stresses of life.

Stress can be cause by many different things including family issues, peer pressure, social media and many more.

All of these things can contribute to stress levels rising in young people who are still trying to figure out how their lives fit together.

When you are stressed out about something,it takes a toll on your mental health and physical health. You become anxious for no reason at all. Anxiety affects about 20% of all adolescents (ages 12-21), and it’s not just a mental health issue—it’s also a physical health issue.

According to WHO one in seven 10-19 year olds experiences mental disorder, accounting for 13% of the global burden of disease in this age group. Also WHO opines that depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among the young people. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among the 15-29 year olds.

These are not numbers that can make anyone of sound mind feel good. Rather it shows a big challenge there is globally and the risk of not resolving it.

Stressed out? You’re not alone.

Studies have shown that teens are stressed out more than ever, and they’re dealing with it in different ways—some of which can be harmful to their mental health. It’s no wonder then that the pressures of school, family, and social media are just a few of the factors that contribute to this increased stress level. But there are some simple steps you can take to help reduce your stress levels—and even improve your overall health!

Ways to Reduce Stress

So what can you do? Stress affects your health negatively. As a youth, there are some ways to held reduce the level of stress from spiraling out of control;Exercising, meditation, counselling, being mindful of how you use social media, checking on the friends you keep, having a goal to work towards to.

Here’s what you need to know:

Exercising: It helps the flow of blood/oxygen to the brain and this helps manage stress levels. Working out and keeping fit ensures the burning of cholesterol in the body and removes excess fat.

Meditation: This is making your brain relaxed and having good thoughts flow through your mind. Avoiding negative thoughts helps in stimulating the brain to be in good mood and help flow of blood throughout the veins of the body. Meditation practices can help you learn how to handle your own emotions in a way that doesn’t make them worse

Therapy/counselling: Everyone has a problem or a challenge in their life. If it does not work out when alone, then it is better to share. A problem shared is a problem half solved.Find someone professional to handle your case and confide in them. Afterwards you will feel relaxed.Therapy and counseling can help you understand why your emotions are so strong right now and what they might mean in the long term

Friends: Birds of the same feather flock together. The company you keep determines the character traits you portray. Be sure to keep good friends who will not think of directing you into the pit. And how will you know about your friends?. If they are not willing to follow the norms and ethos of the society, then keep to your own lane.

Eat health. To keep your metabolism strong and maintain a healthy weight, then you have to eat healthy foods. Not working on your weight means inviting stress into your life.

Sleep: Make sure you get plenty of sleep! Studies show that teens need at least 8 hours a night in order for their brains to function optimally (and if you’re not getting enough sleep during this time of your life? Your body will pay for it later).

Social media: Social media has become a part of modern life for many people. But there’s a downside: it’s easy to feel like you’re being watched by everyone on social media, and even easier to feel like you’re responsible for what everyone else is doing on social media. As a result, many kids and teens feel an incredible amount of pressure to be perfect in every way—which can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Social media pressure kills morale of many youth. One can be depressed because no one likes their Instagram photo or the Facebook post they posted. Just understand that not everyone has to like what you do on social media and you are not there to please people but to unwind. Check the sites you click on because others will just give you stress.

Family: Family issues are another leading reason why kids are stressed out these days. Families have been fractured by divorce or other types of breakups that don’t allow parents to spend as much time with their children as they used to (and sometimes don’t allow them at all). This means that many kids aren’t getting enough love or attention from their parents—and they can’t always turn to their peers when they need some extra attention or support.

Conclusion

It is important to know that stress is a normal part of life. And stress is not going away any sooner. The only way to deal with it is to manage stress. So this is a clarion call to the youth to try as much as possible getting into situations that might bring them stress.
